Otherwise clean. This work is one of the most extravagant and widely known texts by Ukrainian modernist writer and ethnographer Viktor Domontovych (pseudonym of Viktor Petrov; 1894–1969). In the 1920s, he was close to the neoclassical group. It was at this time that he wrote most of his artistic works under the pseudonym of V. Domontovich. Petrov’s works echo the ideas of the existentialists in many aspects. In 1930, he appeared in the case of the fictitious Union for the Liberation of Ukraine. This case was fabricated by the GPU of the Ukrainian SSR in the late 1920s to discredit the Ukrainian scientific intelligentsia as part of the USSR’s centralized repressive policy. Because of this, his early Soviet books got to special access storages and Petrov was demoted from a director to a researcher. Then, starting from the early 1930s, he collaborated with the Soviet intelligence service. During the Stalinist repressions, Petrov continued to work as a scientist, while his former neoclassical colleagues were arrested. From 1941, he lived in German-occupied Kharkiv. He published the magazine “Ukrainsky Zasev” [Ukrainian Sowing] in 1942-1943. Towards the end of the German-Soviet War, he found himself in Germany and was associated with the Ukrainian Scientific Institute in Berlin. He was one of the founders of the Artistic Ukrainian Movement (MUR). While in exile, from 1947 to 1949, he taught ethnography at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Ukrainian Free University in Munich and at the Theological Academy of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. In 1949, he unexpectedly vanished from Munich without warning and resurfaced in the USSR – working for the Institute of the History of Material Culture in Moscow. In the novel, events unfold in 1920s Kyiv. The main character is a chemical engineer and teacher who meets the wealthy family and becomes a tutor for their daughters. One of them captivates him with her avant-garde spirit. She yearns for freedom and challenges social norms. Despite the fact that Petrov was an agent of the NKVD–KGB, none of his literary works were written in the style of socialist realism.
