It's free-standing and has an attached spin disc on the bottom. You don't have to turn it off; however, there is an on/off switch on the bottom. When the music stops, they stop dancing. You don't have to turn it off; however, there is an on/off switch on the bottom. It is in excellent condition and works perfectly. Spot clean only. You have to take the spinning disc off to change the batteries. It unscrews with a small screwdriver. It will come with three new batteries, so it is ready to be used right away.
