Live at Sweet Basil, Vol. 2 Review by Scott Yanow This volume (available originally on Gramavision as a two-LP set and reissued on CD by Evidence) has the same faults as the first. Although arranger/keyboardist Gil Evans is the leader of the 14-piece band, he has a very minor presence on the set, letting his talented sidemen get self-indulgent and take seemingly endless solos. Because the supporting cast includes such fine players as trumpeter Lew Soloff, George Adams on tenor, altoist Chris Hunter, guitarist Hiram Bullock and Pete Levin on synthesizer, the music is not without interest. However these endless jams (which range from 11 to almost 23 minutes) on such songs as "Jelly Roll," Thelonious Monk's "Friday the 13th," "Gone" and Jimi Hendrix's "Stone Free" must have been more interesting live than on record. This is a lesser effort that should have been a memorable one.
