Christopher Columbus's first voyage began on August 3, 1492, when he set sail from Spain in three ships: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. The ships first headed to the Canary Islands, where they stayed for a month. After sailing across the Atlantic Ocean for 10 weeks, a sailor named Rodrigo Bernajo sighted land. Columbus landed on an island in the Bahamas that he called San Salvador. The natives called it Guanahani. Columbus's goal was to find an all-water route to Asia. He thought he had reached India and called the indigenous people “Indians”. He arrived back in Palos, Spain on March 15, 1493. He later met with Ferdinand and Isabella in Barcelona to report his findings.
