It measures approx. 5 1/8" x 8 1/4" Henry Elling (c. 1841–1909) Banker & Pioneer Merchant – Virginia City, Montana Henry Elling was one of the most prominent early businessmen in Virginia City, emerging during the Alder Gulch gold rush of the early 1860s. Originally from Germany (often cited as Prussian-born), Elling arrived in Montana Territory as a young man and quickly became a central figure in the region’s commercial and financial life. By the mid-1860s, Elling had established himself as a merchant and private banker, eventually operating as “Henry Elling, Banker”—a common arrangement in frontier towns before formal national banks were widely available. His bank handled gold dust, drafts, payrolls, and commercial paper, serving miners, merchants, and freight operators throughout Madison County. Elling was deeply involved in civic life: Served in territorial and local government roles. Actively supported infrastructure, trade, and town development. By the 1880s–1890s, Elling was widely regarded as one of Virginia City’s most stable and trusted financial figures, and his name appears regularly in business correspondence, checks, and endorsements from that period. Historical significance: Elling represents the transition from raw mining-camp commerce to more formalized frontier banking in Montana. **Shipped securely in a poly sleeve, with a chipboard backer, inside a small rigid mailer via USPS Ground Advantage service w/ tracking** Click HERE to see postcards I have available.
