Description

Orbis Biblicus et Orientalis by Jean-Marie Durand, Thomas Römer Estimated delivery 3-12 business days Format Hardcover Condition Brand New Description In April 2010, scholars of Assyriology and Biblical Studies at the Collège de France, Paris, gathered for a colloquium to discuss the archaeological and textual evidence for the ways in which ancient Near Eastern societies dealt with their dead. How did these societies view the "afterlife", and what kind of relationship did they have with those who lived before them? For the cuneiform documentation, this raises, for example, the question of how the living commemorated their deceased, particularly by means of the kispum funerary rite whose specific practice and meaning remain to be explored. The distance between the two traditions most strongly represented at this colloquium, the Akkadian and the biblical tradition, is clearly reflected in the repugnance displayed by normative Hebrew sources towards the mortal remains of the body. In Hebrew thought, as it is presented in some biblical texts, death and the deceased are associated with the idea of impurity, while other texts reveal the desire and attempt to establish contact with the world of the dead. Furthermore, Hebrew sources exhibit a biased discourse on traditions relevant to the death and burial of their kings.Certain traditions, of both cuneiform and biblical origin, bear testimony to the idea that human remains, particularly the bones, can retain remnants of the living being after death. The fascinating topic of necromancy, the possibility of communicating with the deceased, is represented here in biblical and Ugaritic sources which also attest the practice of burying the dead in residential houses. 1. Seller sent me the wrong book, but the book they sent sounded interesting enough for me to keep it. I still contacted the seller and communication was fast and professional. They apologized for sending me the wrong book and said I could return it for a refund. I told them that I liked the book they sent me and wanted to keep it. They were happy. Told them thank you and happy new year. People make mistakes, but the fact that this seller was quick and professional and apologized made a difference.

  2. The two new out-of-print books I ordered were exactly as described and shipped promptly. I did ask the seller's support person (an AI chatbot, I think) to be sure to package the items carefully, and "he" said that he'd make that request of the shipping department. I knew this was hooey, and as I expected, the books were shipped in nothing but a padded paper mailer, no other protection. I got lucky, no damage, but don't bother making special requests of this seller.

  3. Book exactly as described. Seller took a while to ship; had to message to ask about my order after a week (business days), which then prompted them to ship the book. They added a tracking number to ebay that didn't update with postal carrier scans, and messaged an outside-ebay link that I was supposed to track the order through, which wasn't great. But the packaging was fine and I received what I ordered, so it worked out.
