Bottle gourd known as White-flowered gourd, "Long Calabash Melon," or "Lauki / Loki," "Dhudhi," "Kaddu," or "Opo" Squash, Chinese Pugua. This edible variety is vigorous, disease-tolerant, and high yielding. Fruit has light green skin, sweet, tender and smooth. Fruit grows 12-14 inches and weighs approximately 2.5 pounds. Sow Bottle gourd is an annual growing vegetable, but the plant is not tolerant to low temperature. The seeds start to sprout in 59 degrees F, fastest in 86-95 degrees F. The suitable growing temperature is 68-77 degrees F. Grow It is easy to grow bottle gourd by seed sowing method throughout the year. Summer is the best time to plant seeds. Seeds are sown directly in small pits or on raised beds which germinate in 10-14 days. Bottle gourd seedlings are very fast growing and quickly form the habit of a climber. A strong trellis support should be built for the climber to grow. Many gardeners let the plant trail on the ground or allow it to climb on poles or roof of the house. Pinch off growing points of the young plant to induce branching. The side shoots will develop separate male and female flowers in the second month. After pollination, the female flowers have little gourds beneath them. If male flowers are plentiful, some of them can be removed. Harvest The harvesting season begins after 2-3 months of seed sowing, and it continues for about 6-8 weeks. Best stage to harvest is when fruits have soft, smooth surface and you can push your finger nail through the skin or scrape it easily.
