With a broken heart, Heathcliff spends months alone until befriended by a small band as gypsies. Although this group enables Heathcliff to learn the skills of poker playing, they also strip him of his pony, the only remaining piece of his love, Cathy. As Heathcliff remains hidden in the woods, he spies a rich estate and watches the escapades of its young inhabitant, Tom. As a reward for saving this young lord during a storm, Heathcliff receives a private education, military training, and a large amount of money from both the boy's father and his uncle, military commander, Colonel Pratt. Heathcliff discovers the way to increase his riches as he hones his poker skills, destroying others in the process without remorse. An injury keeps Heathcliff at the home of a naval Captain long enough for the Captain's daughter to fall in love with him. As soon as Heathcliff has fulfilled all his obligations to his primary benefactor, he takes his gambling wins, not necessarily legally gained, and returns to take back the heart of his young love at Wuthering Heights. Shadows on the Heath bring Heathcliff back to the porch of the Grange just as Emily Bronte wrote in her novel Wuthering Heights. This time the sources of his transformation are revealed.
