Es wurde 1781 zunächst anonym veröffentlicht, dann am 13. Januar 1782 in Mannheim uraufgeführt, wo es für nationales Aufsehen sorgte und Schiller schlagartig berühmt machte. Das Drama schildert die Rivalität zweier gräflicher Brüder: Auf der einen Seite der von seinem Vater geliebte, intelligente, freiheitsliebende spätere Räuber Karl Moor, auf der anderen Seite sein kalt berechnender, unter Liebesentzug leidender Bruder Franz, der auf Karl eifersüchtig ist und das Erbe seines Vaters an sich reißen will. Zentrales Motiv ist der Konflikt zwischen Verstand und Gefühl, zentrales Thema das Verhältnis von Gesetz und Freiheit. Anregung fand Schiller in der Erzählung Zur Geschichte des menschlichen Herzens von Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart. Als Vorlage diente Schiller unter anderem das Schicksal des bekannten Räuberhauptmanns Nikol List. Bis in das erste Viertel des 19. Jahrhunderts waren Räuberbanden in Deutschland nichts Ungewöhnliches. Die gleichnamige Oper von Giuseppe Verdi (I masnadieri) beruht auf Schillers Drama.
