L'autobiografia fu scritta dalla Santa, per ordine del suo Direttore Spirituale (da lei interpellato come "babbo") padre Germano, nel 1900, motivandole la richiesta per poter lui conoscere meglio i suoi peccati e poter meglio dirigerla. Ciò nonostante Gemma la scriveva svogliatamente all'inizio dicendo che "tanto, tutti peccati possibili, io li ho commessi!". Ma ad un severo ordine del suo Angelo Custode, che le disse di scrivere tutta la sua vita, non resistette.Il diario, che descrive poi giornalmente la sua vita dal luglio al settembre 1900, completa quindi questa importante testimonianza della Santa.Il suo confessore padre Germano le chiese di scrivere su un diario le sue esperienze quotidiane di tipo spirituale.
