Animation film director. After graduating from Gakushuin University's Faculty of Political Science and Economics in 1963, he joined Toei Doga (now Toei Animation). After working on scene design and key animation for the theatrical film “The Adventures of Horus, Prince of the Sun” (1968), he moved to A Production, where he handled the original concept, screenplay, scene setting, and key animation for the theatrical medium-length series “Panda! Go, Panda!” (1972, 1973). Subsequently, after working at Zuiyo Eizo, Nippon Animation, and Telecom Animation Film, he participated in the founding of Studio Ghibli in 1985. Major works include the TV series “Conan, the Boy in Future” (1978), and theatrical feature films such as “Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro” (1979), “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” (1984), “Castle in the Sky” (1986), “My Neighbor Totoro” (1988), “Kiki's Delivery Service” (1989), “Porco Rosso” (1992), “Princess Mononoke” (1997), “Spirited Away” (2001), “Howl's Moving Castle” (2004), “Ponyo” (2008), “The Wind Rises” (2013), among others.
