Its focus onthe period between the first century BCE and the early third century CE provides a context for new work being done on early Christian societies, especially in Rome. FORMAT Hardcover LANGUAGE English CONDITION Brand New Publisher Description Concepts of childhood and the treatment of children are often used as a barometer of society's humanity, values, and priorities. Children and Childhood in Roman Italy argues that in Roman society children were, in principle and often in practice, welcome, valued and visible. There is no evidence directly from children themselves, but we can reconstruct attitudes to them, and their own experiences, from a wide variety of material - art and architecture, artefacts, funerary dedications, Roman law, literature, and public and private ritual. There are distinctively Roman aspects to the treatment of children and to children's experiences. Education at many levels wasimportant. The commemoration of children who died young has no parallel, in earlier or later societies, before the twentieth century. This study builds on the dynamic work on the Roman family that has been developing in recent decades. Ancient History: Resources for Teachers Review Quote This monograph will provide its readers with so many thought-provoking images and much enlightenment. Feature Advances the subject much further than it has ever gone before Offers a comprehensive survey of the evidence Illuminates the contemporary debate concerning the upbringing of children Shows that the assumption of a simple linear development - from repression to permissiveness - over the last twenty centuries is unjustified Details ISBN 0199240345 Author Beryl Rawson Short Title CHILDREN & CHILDHOOD IN ROMAN Language English ISBN-10 0199240345 ISBN-13 9780199240340 Media Book Format Hardcover Year 2003 Imprint Oxford University Press Place of Publication Oxford Country of Publication United Kingdom Affiliation Australian National University, Canberra, Australia DOI 10.1604/9780199240340 UK Release Date 2003-09-04 AU Release Date 2003-09-04 NZ Release Date 2003-09-04 Pages 434 Publisher Oxford University Press Publication Date 2003-09-04 Alternative 9780199285174 DEWEY 305.230937 Illustrations numerous halftones Audience Professional & Vocational Country of Origin US Product Class Description Ancient History We've got this At The Nile, if you're looking for it, we've got it. 2. I had a ‘90s copy. I was excited about the new edition. With a new forward by J Wasserman and intro by LM DuQuette. The book was excellent value and it arrived in perfect condition as it was sold new. A gorgeous looking tome.I gave 5 stars for the description, I had no communication with the seller and only gave 4 stars for Dispatch Time. Dispatched on Nov 4th with the last day being tomorrow. The process was great. Highly recommended. I’ve done business with these guys and will continue to.

  3. Good seller despite the negative feedback that I read. Communication has been excellent, seller has been responding professionally. The seller gave me a delivery date and the book arrived on time as promised. Book came in excellent mint condition. My only criticism would be that the seller should mention in the description that they do not keep the books in stock and have to order them in. This gives the buyer expectations that they have to wait a little longer to receive their book.
