Gli Alleati con questi convogli cercarono di portare aiuto e materiale all'URSS che stava combattendo assieme a loro le forze del Terzo Reich. I convogli artici, organizzati dal 1941 al 1945, erano destinati al porto di Arkhangelsk, in estate, e a Murmansk, in inverno, attraverso l'Islanda e l'Oceano Artico, compiendo viaggi pericolosissimi in acque tra le più ostili al mondo. La grande battaglia avvenne a metà settembre 1942 e questa volta lo scontro fu assai più arduo per le forze tedesche, che riuscirono ad affondare 13 mercantili ma subirono la perdita di ben tre U-boot oltre ad altri 4 danneggiati e 20 aerei da combattimento.
