It was a part of the original three books series, that was later changed to a two book series. This book and Pearl Farmers were combined with an interlude using John F Kennedy's famous speech "I am a Berliner". It was listed as one of the twenty five greatest speeches of the twentieth century by Time-Life books. It made a nice Segway between the two books featuring Sammy, then his brother Billy's military careers. This book is at a reduced price. It has since been revised along with Pearl Farmers. This is the original Black Pearls text. Changes made were taking out chapter two "Calgon Take Me Away due to some timing issues. The children's workshop with Sesame Street did not actually begin till 1969. This story took place in 1961-1962. Also the Calgon advertisement itself was from the 1970's. The spirit of the chapter was preserved in the other chapters. The final word count for the final text was much higher even without the speeches and poetry included. All of the text was approximately 27,000 word a few more than Oyster bay. There were few other minor problems with the text that were also changed such as how Bonnie's pregnancy was addressed in conversation, and the actual high school baseball being played. Jackie Robinson's letter to President John F Kennedy was added to the text with the full letter being placed in the appendix.
