Proust and the Victorians : The Lamp of Memory, Paperback by Fraser, Robert, ISBN 1349232513, ISBN-13 9781349232512, Like New Used, Free shipping in the US In 1899 Marcel Proust read a translation of Ruskin's The Lamp of Memory in a Belgian magazine. Fourteen years later he back-projected the experience onto the narrator of Du cote de chez Swann who describes himself as a boy reading the self-same piece in the garden at Combray. In between lay a period of intermittent enthusiasm for Victorian writing: a period which saw the refurbishment of Proust's method and a fundamental rethinking of his views. Much of this reassessment was achieved in relation to English writers whom Proust adopted, absorbed and then as often as not discarded. The end result was to enable him to pass from one aesthetic to is the contention of this book that the clue to this process can be found not only in Proust's evolving views on memory and time but also in his progression through a three-fold typology of form: from 'mimetic form' (art-imitating-the-real) through 'mnemonic form' (art-imitating-memory) to 'abstract form' (art-imitating-itself). The progress from one to another is illustrated through Proust's reactions to Carlyle, Darwin, Emerson, Ruskin, George Eliot, Hardy, Stevenson, Wells and Wilde. There is also a chapter on the connection in Proust's mind between literary and art criticism and his delayed response to the Ruskin-Whistler trial of 1878. A final chapter relates these matters to the current debate as to the parallel between the nineteenth century fin-de-siecle and our own.
Book was in excellent new condition as described. Book arrived in great shape. Excellent overall cost. There was a shipping problem however, there were 3 books labeled as shipping together, but 2 separate packages were used and both had same tracking number so first package triggered delivered status on all 3 books even though only 2 arrived, the second package with book 3 came next day. So if you dont get one of your books when it says delivered you might wait a couple days for the 2nd package.
On the hunt for this particular cover art, the seller was very helpful with guidance on how to confirm through an ISBN search with the publisher. That solidified my choice to purchase from this seller. The book was packaged well for shipping and protection during travels. I'm extremely pleased with the pricing coupled with the mint condition of the book and the fast shipping (considering the hinderances caused by the current winter conditions). Great transaction and I will shop with them again!
As pictured / as described. Shipping - I ordered Dec 12 and glanced to see something like "Arrives ... 17th-21st", quickly thinking, "OK - plenty of time for Christmas". When it didn't show up, I went back to find it was actually "January 14th-17th" - oops! my goof! Wasn't expecting 5 week shipping. But ultimately, it did come in on Dec 26th, so quicker than the stated and might have been even quicker if not for holidays. Otherwise, good packing. Quick, easy transaction. Thanks!
